S&P 500 Technology stocks: today's ranking and data

The S&P 500 has 85 companies in Technology today. It accounts for 38.0% of the market value of the index companies. Its median P/E is 32.2, against 23.6 for the index as a whole.

What Technology is and what drives its earnings

What it includes. Semiconductors and the equipment to make them, software (systems, security and business applications), computers, storage and networking gear, electronic components, test and measurement instruments, and IT consulting and outsourcing. Three absences that surprise people: Alphabet and Meta sit in Communication Services, and Amazon in Consumer Cyclical. Visa and Mastercard are not here either: they are in Financial Services.

What drives its earnings. How much companies spend on equipment, cloud and data centers (and, in recent years, on computing capacity for artificial intelligence), the chip cycle, which swings between shortage and excess inventory, PC and phone replacement cycles, and the shift of software to subscriptions, which turns one-off sales into recurring, high-margin revenue. Many of these companies earn a large share abroad, so the dollar matters too.

How it is usually valued. The market pays for expected growth, so the sector tends to trade at a higher P/E than the index as a whole and is among the most sensitive to interest rates: the further out the earnings being discounted, the more the discount rate weighs. The table below shows whether that holds today.

The classification is the one used by this site's data provider, similar to but not the same as GICS, S&P's standard: this sector roughly matches "Information Technology". Counts may therefore differ from other sources.

All 85 stocks in the sector, by today's multi-factor rank

The rank is the order produced by a quantitative model on data as of Sep 18, 2026: the average of four factors (momentum, value, quality and growth) computed from public data, against the 466 index companies that score. It is a calculation, not a recommendation to buy or sell: it knows nothing about anyone's situation, horizon or risk, and the returns of portfolios built with it are simulated. How it is computed: see the methodology.

The median is the company in the middle: a few firms with near-zero earnings and huge P/Es do not move it, which is what happens to the average. Loss-making companies have no P/E and are left out.
