Rel. vol.: the session's volume divided by the average of the previous 20 ("×1" is normal; "—" if there is not enough history). "Earnings": the SEC filing (8-K) this session reflects, before the open or the evening before; if the 8-K has not been processed yet, the date announced in Nasdaq's calendar. "After this close": it reported after the session, so its change does not reflect it yet. "Insiders 30d": open-market buys and sales filed on Form 4 (Aug 19, 2026 to Sep 18, 2026), excluding grants and option exercises.

How to read a day's gainers and losers

A single day is mostly noise. A large stock moving one or two points in a session is normal and rarely reflects company news. These tables start to say something when a move is several times that stock's usual range, and even then one session does not make a trend.

Big moves usually have a cause. Earnings and guidance, an announced deal or merger, analysts changing their view, a regulatory decision or a clinical trial. That is why each row shows whether the company had just reported earnings and whether its insiders bought or sold shares in the last month: two causes that can be checked in public filings, the 8-K and the Form 4 filed with the SEC.

Volume tells you how many were behind it. A move on two or three times the usual volume involved a lot of trading and usually reflects new information; one on normal volume carries less weight and reverses more easily.

The company or its sector? Compare each row with its sector's median in the table above. If the whole sector falls, the cause is usually shared (interest rates, commodities, regulation); if one company falls while its sector rises, the news is its own.

The index is not the typical stock. The S&P 500 weights each company by market value, so a handful of giants can lift it while most of its stocks fall. That is why, besides SPY, this page shows how many rose, how many fell and the median.

Moves that are not news. On the day a stock starts trading without its dividend, its price drops by roughly the amount paid, and the changes here are price-only, without dividends. Splits are adjusted, and a huge jump that cannot be confirmed by a second source is not published, because it may be a data error.

What this page does not say. A big gain is not a signal to buy, nor a big loss a signal to sell. Academic research has documented both very short-term reversals and continuation over several months, but those are average effects measured over thousands of stocks and many years, not predictions for a given stock tomorrow.
