S&P 500 Communication Services stocks: today's ranking and data
The S&P 500 has 21 companies in Communication Services today (24 tickers: some companies trade with two share classes). It accounts for 10.8% of the market value of the index companies. Its median P/E is 21.2, against 23.6 for the index as a whole.
What Communication Services is and what drives its earnings
What it includes. Telecom carriers (wireless, fiber and cable), media and entertainment (studios, television, streaming platforms, live events), search and social media (Alphabet and Meta are here, not in Technology), video games and advertising. GICS created this sector in 2018, when Alphabet and Meta were moved out of Technology to sit with media and telecom.
What drives its earnings. Advertising, digital above all, which gets cut when the economy slows; subscriptions (how many subscribers and how much they pay) in streaming and telecom; and, for carriers, price competition and the cost of building and running networks.
How it behaves. It is a very uneven mix: slow-growing, dividend-paying carriers sit next to internet platforms worth trillions of dollars. In a sector like that, the median and the largest companies tell different stories, and both are below.
The classification is the one used by this site's data provider, similar to but not the same as GICS, S&P's standard: this sector roughly matches "Communication Services". Counts may therefore differ from other sources.
All 24 stocks in the sector, by today's multi-factor rank
The rank is the order produced by a quantitative model on data as of Sep 18, 2026: the average of four factors (momentum, value, quality and growth) computed from public data, against the 466 index companies that score. It is a calculation, not a recommendation to buy or sell: it knows nothing about anyone's situation, horizon or risk, and the returns of portfolios built with it are simulated. How it is computed: see the methodology.
