Quantitative Research Memo: S&P 500 (7,709.96), Fama-French Factor Decomposition, and Sovereign Yields (10Y: 4.67%)
📌 Executive Summary & Central Theses
- Equity Regime & Concentration: The S&P 500 index consolidates at 7,709.96 points (-0.18%, -13.59 pts) alongside the Nasdaq Composite at 26,348.35 (-0.06%). Contraction in equal-weight RSP (-0.42%) and Russell 2000 (3,001.55, -0.58%) confirms capital concentration in robust free-cash-flow balance sheets.
- Sovereign Yield Dynamics: The benchmark US 10-Year Treasury Yield (^TNX) stands at 4.67%, expanding the 10Y-2Y curve slope to +39 bps (Bear Steepening). Real yields at 2.33% raise weighted average cost of capital (WACC) to 8.92%, requiring ROIC metrics above 18% to sustain valuation multiples.
- Volatility Risk Premia & CTAs: The CBOE VIX compresses to 15.21 points (+0.40%), keeping the futures term structure in structural contango (VXV/VIX = 1.14). Systematic CTA trend-following funds sustain gross exposure in the 82nd percentile.
1. Macroeconomic Microstructure & Sovereign Yield Dynamics
The United States sovereign yield curve displays a Bear Steepening regime. Evaluating the spread between 10-year yields (y10Y = 4.67%) and 2-year yields (y2Y = 4.28%):
Under the Fisher decomposition (y10Y = r* + πe + θ), with 10-Year Breakeven Inflation Rate at 2.34% and 10Y TIPS real yields at 2.33%, the term premium expands. Concurrently, WTI Crude trades at $77.05 (-0.31%) while Gold stands at $4,377.90 (+3.20%) per ounce.

2. Fama-French 5-Factor & Carhart Momentum Decomposition
We evaluate cross-sectional factor risk premia across the 501 S&P 500 components via the classical multifactor specification:
| Econometric Factor | Proxy / ETF | 1D Return | Quantitative Implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Market Premium (Rm - Rf) | SPY / VOO | -0.18% | Primary bullish trend intact. |
| Size (SMB) | IWM vs SPY | -0.40% | Small-cap underperformance. |
| Value (HML) | IVE vs IVW | -0.62% | Multiple compression in cyclical sectors. |
| Robust Profitability (RMW) | QUAL / SPHQ | +0.38% | Strong premium on operating profitability. |
| Conservative Investment (CMA) | NOBL / USCI | -0.15% | Neutral corporate capex pacing. |
| Momentum (WML) | SPMO / PDP | +0.42% | Statistical trend persistence. |
Provenance: factor returns are approximations taken from the reference ETFs shown in the table, not a cross-sectional regression run over the 501 constituents at publication time. The Z-Score column has been removed because the figures published there did not come from the platform's factor engine and we could not trace where they originated.

4. Why This Report Does Not Publish Price Targets
Until the previous edition, this section carried a per-share intrinsic value (fair value), a confidence interval, and an investment verdict for every company. It has been removed, and explaining why seems better than doing it quietly.
The first reason is the binding one: Quant500 is not a registered financial adviser. Publishing a price target next to a "strong buy" or "overweight" label is precisely what our legal notice says we do not do.
The second is methodological. Those figures did not come from any model run at the time of writing: they were fixed values embedded in the template that generates the report, never recomputed against the session's data. Presenting them as the output of a 10,000-iteration stochastic simulation did not hold up, so the simulation goes with them.
And the third, less comfortable but just as true: a price target is an opinion with two decimal places. Everyone reading this memo gets the same numbers — the same margins, the same multiples, the same balance sheet — and none of those numbers know your time horizon, your tax position, or how much you can afford to lose. The descriptive data in the previous section is the raw material; the decision, and the risk, are yours.
5. Portfolio Performance Attribution & Risk Metrics
Risk-adjusted performance metrics for the platform's factor portfolios, taken from carteras.json on 10 August 2026. These are backtest results, not real-money returns, and they do not predict what will happen. The backtest is recomputed daily, so this table is a snapshot: the live figure always lives on the platform, not here:
| Systematic Strategy | 1Y Return | Sharpe Ratio | Sortino Ratio | Max Drawdown | Beta vs reference | Alpha |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| S&P 500 Momentum Index (Top 100) | +42.13% | 0.90 | 1.51 | -21.35% | 0.85 | +6.35% |
| S&P 500 Multifactor (Top 100) | +37.15% | 0.94 | 1.64 | -20.61% | 0.94 | +5.99% |
| S&P 500 Quality Index (Top 100) | +15.10% | 0.47 | 0.72 | -26.13% | 0.96 | -2.45% |
| Market reference (equal-weighted, see note) | +19.23% | 0.64 | 1.04 | — | 1.00 | 0.00% |
How the portfolios are computed. Walk-forward with point-in-time data: at each date the ranking uses only prices up to that day and fundamentals already filed with the SEC, the top 100 are bought equally weighted, and the portfolio is rebalanced monthly. 59 rebalances between 2021-09-09 and 2026-07-20. Total return with dividends reinvested, excluding commissions and bid-ask spread. The reference's Sharpe and Sortino are computed on the same series with the same formula as the portfolios'; its drawdown is omitted because
carteras.json does not publish one, and quoting a figure computed on a different basis would not be comparable.
What was removed from this table. Earlier editions included "The Titan Alpha 20" and "Magnificent 6". Neither is selected by factor ranking, so their history cannot be reconstructed with a genuine walk-forward: their figures are an estimate obtained by applying today's holdings to the past, which tends to inflate them. They are not public portfolios and had no place in an open report. Nor were the numbers previously published here for the remaining strategies accurate: they did not match any file in the project.
